The Chase Ranch Room
The Chase Ranch lies in a valley of the Ponil River near Cimarron and has long been
known as one of the finest ranches in the area.  Manly Chase was born in Wisconsin in
1842 and came with his family to Central City, CO for the gold Rush in 1858; and moved
to New Mexico in 1867.  When Mr. Chase came to the Ponil, the Utes and Apaches were
living in a nearby canyon.  He made friends with them and he was accepted as a good
neighbor who provided them with beef. They in turn offered  his family protection from
other hostile tribes who often made raids in this vicinity.    Mr Chase was the first to raise
Hereford cattle in this area.  There is a great deal known about the Chases since Manly
Chase left over 70 books of records including several daily diaries which are now in the
NM State University Library.  The Chase Ranch currently consists of 11,000 acres and is
owned and operated by Gretchen Sammis, a great grand-daughter of the pioneer Manly
Chase.
